Purpose:
To design, build and test a device that will assist individuals with limited hand mobility in performing oral hygiene by themselves.
Project's Final Poster |
Method:
Applied a design methodology in order to practice solving real life problems on a team of four. I participated as a mechanical designer, fabricater, report writer, and tester. The method we implemented to come up with a solution entailed the following: Identify problem, brainstorm/research/sketch, choose initial solution, analyze design, identify/obtain all needed parts, build prototype, test/evaluate initial design, refine initial solution, retest, communicate results.
Final Design SolidWorks Model |
- Hands-free way of reliable washing
- Affordable
- Easy to service
- New product development: No similar commercial products
- Safe to use: Isolate electrical and liquid systems from each other to avoid safety hazards
- User-activated cleaning by pressing on switch with the chin
- Pedal control for rinsing and suction
- Easy to use
- Flexible mouthpiece that’s easy to replace
- Swing arm for easy adjusting for varying heights of men and women
Validation/Testing results:
- Device worked as intended and successfully managed to clean a tester’s teeth for a period of two weeks
- Device was under budget
- Minor leakage, but would be easily corrected with a better suction and rinse control system
