Background:
Simple design project that I decided to do in my spare time to learn the inner workings of a piston cylinder "flat head or L head" engine, which are typically found in lawn mowers and other small equipment.
Note: for simplicity, I did not add the main crankshaft and camshaft bearings, cooling jackets, and my case is a simplified engine block meant to show as much component motion as possible.
Components:
crankshaft, camshaft, spur timing gears, flywheel, key, case (made-up by me), top flat-head engine cover, spark plug, cylinder, piston, piston rings, piston pin, piston pin bushing, snap rings, connecting rod, lower bearing cap, bearings, socket head cap screws, valves, springs, valve spring seat, valve retainer (cap), valve keepers.
Design:
4-stroke (Otto cycle) internal combustion engine, single cylinder, two valves, 2:1 gear ratio, 40 teeth: 20 teeth, 169.71mm gear center distance, flat-head cover (valves on the side).
